With his overwhelming power, Cell casts Vegeta aside and directs a Ki blast at the Prince that leaves Gohan critically wounded. But the moment is poorly timed and it takes next to no effort for Cell to subdue Vegeta. After spending all arc ignoring his son, Vegeta finally realizes what Trunks means to him. 2 Attacked By Cellįollowing Trunks’ death at the Cell Games, Vegeta loses his sense of self and launches into a rage directed at Cell. That said, the Androids uncharacteristically spare the main cast. As 18 maintains her infinite stamina, Vegeta slows down and is eventually left broken on the ground. Despite finally triggering Super Saiyan, he’s nothing in the face of the Artificial Humans. Vegeta’s fight against Android 18 is brutal for him. By all accounts, Androids 18 and 17 are strong enough to kill every member of the Dragon Team when they’re introduced– Goku included. Vegeta’s lucky Goku showed up when he did. His best efforts amount to superficial damage while Recoome manhandles Vegeta all around Namek. While the fight against Gurd goes fine enough, Vegeta can do nothing against Recoome. Sensing their familiar and overwhelming Ki, Vegeta reluctantly teams up with Gohan & Vegeta to fight them off. That all changes once Frieza calls the Ginyu Force, though. Nearly dying to Zarbon gives Vegeta an enormous power boost that makes him one of the worst threats on Namek for Gohan and Krillin. Had Frieza not instructed Zarbon to interrogate Vegeta, the Prince would have drowned to death on Namek. Transforming into his beastial form, Zarbon beats Vegeta into submission and actually does leave him to die. While both Cui and Dodoria prove to be easy prey, Zarbon ends up putting Vegeta in his place. The Saiyan Elite goes from struggling against Goku to taking out Frieza’s henchmen with minimal effort. The fact Vegeta survives at all is a miracle. Vegeta wastes his energy turning into an Oozaru, gets his tail cut off, gets beat up by Gohan, gets cut with a katana by Yajirobe, takes a Genki Dama at point blank, and then gets mauled by an Oozaru Gohan. While Goku trashes his body through the Kaioken, it’s enough to damage Vegeta’s pride & prevent him from thinking clearly. He’s completely caught off guard by Goku’s raw power. Vegeta gets his first taste of true humility when he lands on Earth. Vegeta dances with death quite often in Dragon Ball Z and the fact he’s not always guaranteed to survive keeps his battles exciting. Both characters use this to their advantage in order to become considerably stronger during the Namek arc, but Vegeta simply makes a habit of almost dying throughout Dragon Ball Z’s run. Shortly after Goku’s fight with Vegeta, it’s revealed that Saiyans become stronger every time they almost die in battle and recover. Death hadn’t quite lost its impact by the Namek arc, but Akira Toriyama had begun recontextualizing the main cast’s relationship with both dying and almost dying.
